Amt is an Amt
Amt, after Amt, after Amt. When diving head first into research of any kind, all would agree that it is best to get organized and know what you’re looking for where. In Germany, it’s probably going to involve one of many agencies or an Amt.
Bürgeramt - Local Public Office - Where you would find an ancestors registration and de-registration within a German village or city
Standesamt - Civil Registry Office - Bureau housing birth, marriage and death certificates
Jugendamt - Child Welfare Office
Ausländeramt - Public Officer for Foreigners
Finanzamt - Tax Office
Aside from church records, these are good places to start your search. I’m wading my way through them now.
