Personalized Placemats

Do relatives scatter when you pull out the pedigree chart? Children roll their eyes when you mention looking at the photo albums—again? Make connecting with the family more fun for everyone with personalized placemats. And the best part? Just about anything will work: photos, hand-drawn pictures, old newspapers, vintage postcards, maps, and, of course, your famous pedigree charts.

Supplies

  • Clear contact paper or a laminating machine (check with a local print or copy center)
  • Posterboard, construction paper, heavy-weight paper
  • Photos, artwork, postcards, newspapers, stickers, fabric, etc. (almost anything that will lie flat can be used)
  • Glue, scissors, markers, paint, and other decorations you might need
  • How-to

  • Determine the placemat’s size, typically 12″ x 17″; if you’re using a laminating machine, check sizes and specs before proceeding.
  • Cut paper to the appropriate size and attach photos, pictures, and embellishments to the paper. Make a design on each side for a reversible placemat.
  • If glue or markers are used, let the placemat dry for several hours.
  • Insert the paper between two sheets of clear contact paper or take it to a local print shop to be laminated.
