Family Stepping Stones

Up to your elbows in dirt and weeds? Take a break from gardening, gather your family together, and create personalized stepping stones that will remind you of family all year long.
Supplies:

Bag of quick-setting concrete. A 50 lb. bag makes seven 10″ stones. Consider a box of concrete tint for colors besides gray.

Stepping stone molds like plastic plant saucers or foil pie tins.

Decorations such as rocks, shells, glass pebbles, thimbles, or buttons. Remember, any embellishment needs to be durable enough to be walked on.

A drop cloth or plastic tablecloth, gloves, old towels, and a bucket and trowel to mix the cement. Use a wheelbarrow and shovel for larger batches.

How-to:
1 Mix cement according to package directions. Add water until the cement is the consistency of thick cake batter.

2 Pour or scoop cement mixture into a mold. Gently move the mold back and forth until the surface is smooth and bubbles disappear. Let the mold set up for 30 minutes.

3 Carve names, make handprints, or add embellishments by gently pressing them into the wet mixture.

4Allow the mold to harden undisturbed for one to two days.

5 To remove, tap the back of the mold until the stone comes out or make a small cut in the mold to release it.
