My mother grew up in a post-WWII home. Her father died when she was newly married. She was well aquainted with a life of living on meager means. She also lived much simpler. I hear from my mother frequently how complicated she feels our lives are today for a growing family. We are asked to take on so many levels of complexity right out of the gate. We’re groomed to do it from our early years in school. We apply for college earlier and are expected to graduate. My mother’s time was certainly simpler, but with the simplicity came a certain level of restriction too. Her time did not afford the same areas of pursuit for women in particular. It seems also, that the stories I learn of from her time and the generation before are more heavily affected by war - WWI and WWII. Interesting to me that we seem to be at war often in our present generation, yet it holds a completely different position in our world that those of her generation.
