Two women—Marilyn Carlson and Valerie Holladay—were searching for an ancestor named Mary Ann. Marilyn, who took on the project for a client in the early 1980s, conducted her search the “Old School” way without the benefit of computers and indexes. Valerie, a novice genealogist, started her search in 2004 and took the “New School” approach, conducting her search electronically.
